This position is based at our new clinic in El Pojom, a remote rural area in Huehuetenango. We are looking for a Medical Provider to deliver daily general medical consultations and provide comprehensive patient care.
Working in this setting involves contributing to the implementation of clinic services, adapting care to the local community context, and supporting the strengthening of local practices. The role offers a significant level of autonomy, meaningful engagement with the community, and a valuable professional and personal experience. It may be especially suitable for candidates who are motivated by independent work, collaborative problem-solving, and practicing in a resource-limited setting.
Responsibilities
1. Direct patient care
- Provide comprehensive medical care for patients with a wide range of conditions, including primary care and emergency care.
- Deliver high-quality care within a resource-limited setting and with limited referral options.
- Coordinate with other medical team members to support continuity of care.
2. Cultural sensitivity and community engagement
- Engage respectfully with local communities, recognizing and valuing cultural norms, traditions, and health-related beliefs.
- Adapt patient education and care plans to the social, cultural, and practical context of the community.
3. Emergency response
- Be available to respond to emergency calls and urgent clinical situations in a timely and professional manner.
- Make informed clinical decisions in collaboration with the Guatemalan Doctor, particularly in high-pressure and resource-limited situations.
- Accompany patients to the nearest hospital when emergency transfer is required.
4. Documentation and accountability
- Maintain accurate, complete, and well-organized patient records using the organization’s information systems.
- Follow clinical protocols and communicate any concerns or operational challenges to management in a timely manner.
- Keep and submit receipts for approved expenses, help manage the clinic’s petty cash, and support financial record-keeping as needed.
5. Supply and inventory support
- Support the monitoring and organization of medications, medical supplies, and equipment.
- Communicate supply needs proactively to clinic leadership.
6. Shared living and workplace responsibilities
- Help maintain the clinic and staff house in a clean and orderly condition, including participation in weekly shared cleaning tasks.
- Contribute to meal preparation in the staff house as part of a shared rotation.
7. Teamwork and communication:
- Participate in online team meetings and individual meetings with the National Director and Medical Director.
- Maintain open, clear, and respectful communication with colleagues, including volunteers, medical staff, and administrative staff.
- Provide timely updates and respond to questions or concerns in a professional and constructive way.
- Represent Health & Help in the local community in a respectful and positive manner, in line with the organization’s humanitarian values and principles.
Skills & Requirements
- Is able to commit to the role for a minimum of 6 months.
- Holds a valid license to practice as a Medical Doctor in their country of origin.
- Has at least 1 year of experience in a similar role; experience working with rural, remote, or underserved communities is an advantage.
- Leads by example through professionalism, commitment, and accountability, and demonstrates a strong dedication to ethical and sustainable healthcare practices.
- Communicates openly, clearly, and respectfully, and responds to questions or concerns in a professional and constructive manner.
- Shows commitment to strengthening clinical skills, particularly in diagnosis and treatment planning in resource-limited settings.

- Approaches challenges such as supply shortages, complex cases, and limited resources with creativity, adaptability, and resilience.
- Remains flexible and responsive to changing patient needs, clinic priorities, environmental conditions, and the realities of working in remote areas.
We provide
- Monthly stipend: 500 USD
- Location: El Pojom, Huehuetenango, Guatemala. Accommodation is provided in the volunteer house located within the clinic grounds
- Meals are provided during on-site weeks at the clinic, including 3 meals per day; menu options may be limited
- Work arrangement: 3 weeks on-site at the clinic, followed by 1 week off each month.
- Working hours: Monday to Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with availability for emergency care during on-site weeks, as needed
- Start date for paid essential training: Monday, March 1, 2026, in Momostenango
- Start date for the position in El Pojom: Wednesday, March 25, 2026
