Medical Provider (El Pojom Clinic)

This position is in our new clinic in the remote rural region of El Pojom in Huehuetenango. We are looking for a Medical Provider to carry out daily general medicine consultations and provide comprehensive care to patients, including during emergencies.

Working in this more isolated area involves leadership in implementation, adaptation to the community context, and strengthening local practices. This role involves a high degree of autonomy, strong community interaction, and a deeply enriching professional and human experience, ideal for those seeking autonomy, pioneering work, and greater challenges.

Responsibilities

1. Direct patient care:

  • Provide comprehensive medical care to patients with a wide variety of conditions, including primary care and emergency care.
  • Ensure that the highest standards of care are maintained, despite limited resources and reduced referral options.
  • Coordinating with other medical staff members, and ensuring continuity of care.

2. Cultural sensitivity:

  • Interact respectfully with local communities, recognizing cultural norms, traditions, and beliefs related to health.
  • Adapt patient education and care plans to the social and cultural context of the community.

3. Emergency response:

  • Be available for emergency calls and critical care situations, responding in a timely manner to patients’ needs.
  • Make informed clinical decisions, with the support of the Guatemalan Doctor, under pressure in a resource-limited setting.
  • Accompany patients to the nearest hospital if emergency transfer is necessary.

4. Documentation and due diligence:

  • Maintain accurate and organized patient records using the organization’s information systems.
  • Comply with clinical protocols and promptly communicate any problems in the clinic to management.
  • Keep and file receipts for all expenses, manage the clinic’s petty cash, and support financial tracking.

5. Supply and inventory management:

  • Support the monitoring and organization of medications, medical supplies, and equipment.
  • Proactively communicate supply needs to clinic leadership.

6. General staff house responsibilities:

  • Keep the clinic and staff house clean and tidy, participating in weekly cleaning activities.
  • Contribute to meal preparation in the staff house, rotating this responsibility.

7. Teamwork and communication:

  • Participate in remote meetings with the team online and in individual meetings with the National Director and Medical Director of the organization.
  • Maintain open, clear, and constant communication with the team, including volunteers, medical staff, and administrative staff.
  • Provide timely updates and respond to concerns professionally and effectively.
  • Promote a positive image of the Health & Help organization in the village community, promoting the humanitarian principles of Health & Help.

Skills & Requirements

Key requirements

  • Be duly licensed as a Medical Doctor in your country of origen.
  • Experience: At least 1 year of experience in similar positions, preferably with experience in rural, remote, or underserved populations.

  • Accommodation included in the volunteer house within the clinic
  • Meals included (3 meals a day) during weeks of on-site work at the clinic (limited menu)
  • Vacation: 1 week for every 3 weeks worked
  • Travel expenses are not covered

Key details of the position

  • Location: El Pojom, Huehuetenango, Guatemala
  • Stipend: 500 USD per month
  • Modality: 3 weeks on-site at the clinic / 1 week off each month
  • Minimum commitment: 6 months
  • Working hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with availability for emergency care during weeks of on-site work at the clinic
  • Start date of essential paid training: Monday 1st of March 2026 (In Momostenango)
